Second Sight Medical Products, a Sylmar, CA–based life sciences company that designs, manufactures and sells a retinal prosthesis, needed a more capable ERP as it expanded manufacturing and faced new reporting and compliance demands as a public company. Having used QAD Standard Edition since 2007, a user‑group presentation and an assessment by QAD partner SIG showed that many recommended improvements required upgrading to QAD Enterprise Edition (EE) and that SE would no longer receive development investment.

Working with QAD and SIG, Second Sight built a parallel EE system while keeping SE live, completed pre‑conversion checks, five dry runs, a one‑day validation and a scripted three‑day cutover (actual conversion ~2.5 hours), and went live on time and on budget. The EE upgrade delivered immediate benefits—stronger financial controls and auditing, improved security model, Excel integration, item‑level attributes, lot traceability, easier maintenance and better QMS integration—boosting operational efficiency with minimal customizations.
