The University of Sydney achieves 2 error-correctable logical qubits in 1 atom with Q-CTRL

The University of Sydney faced the challenge of overcoming spontaneous qubit errors and reducing the vast number of physical qubits required to build scalable quantum computers. To address this, they worked with Q-CTRL, utilizing their Boulder Opal quantum control software.

Q-CTRL's solution provided the precision control necessary to manipulate a single atom's quantum vibrations, enabling the demonstration of a quantum logic gate using Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) error-correcting codes. This resulted in the first realization of a universal logical gate set for GKP qubits, successfully entangling two error-correctable logical qubits within a single atom. The outcome drastically reduced hardware demands, achieving a highly compact and hardware-efficient form for scalable quantum information processing.
