Pythian Helps Freshdirect Reduce Customer Log-In Times from 1 Minute to Half a Second

FreshDirect, the online grocery retailer, was facing growing customer frustration from severe log-in delays that could stretch to 60 seconds as order volume increased. With more than 250,000 customers and a fast-growing business, FreshDirect turned to Pythian for help with its database infrastructure and performance issues, including a complex environment using Oracle RAC and ASM.

Pythian led a project to rewrite the user authentication process, making application, database, and design changes across FreshDirect’s production environment of more than 40 databases. The result was a dramatic improvement: log-in time dropped to 0.5 seconds, making the system 120 times faster, while also reducing costs and improving operational reliability for FreshDirect.
