Pythian Helps A Telco Giant Reduce Its Costs In Managing Today’s Explosion Of Unstructured Data

The Multinational Telecommunications Provider, a global telco with hundreds of millions of customers, needed a better way to manage rapidly growing, increasingly unstructured data while reducing reliance on Oracle and Microsoft databases. The company wanted to explore open source, non-relational databases that could improve performance and lower costs, and worked with Pythian to identify the right approach.

Pythian delivered a time-series Apache Cassandra proof of concept on Google Cloud Platform, using Terraform, Puppet, and Apache Spark to test a billing-events use case. The project proved the provider could move a real-world workload off Oracle, giving it confidence to reduce license costs while also demonstrating Cassandra’s high availability and elastic scalability.
