NAV Canada, the organization that manages Canada’s civil air navigation services and critical flight-planning systems, needed to move complex Oracle-based flight data to a more cost-efficient platform without sacrificing performance. To support this challenge, it turned to Pythian and Microsoft Azure SQL Database for a migration of its mission-critical data and applications.

Pythian led the migration by rewriting more than 3,000 lines of Oracle PL/SQL into T-SQL, redesigning tables, and optimizing database structures through a proof of concept on Azure. The result was a successful move to Microsoft Azure SQL Database that demonstrated comparable performance in a lower-cost environment, with the solution now being implemented in production and delivering significant cost savings.
