A Pure Storage Case Study
The University of Louisville School of Dentistry—supporting more than 1,100 access points, nearly 1,000 VDI users and 87,000+ patient visits annually—faced a critical IT failure during a 2014 refresh when legacy storage caused extreme login delays (over 30 minutes), service crashes under peak clinic loads and canceled sessions that threatened patient care, student learning and cost up to $40,000 per day in lost revenue.
Working with Hogan Consulting, the school replaced the bottlenecked array with a Pure Storage FlashArray, virtualized on VMware and upgraded Citrix XenDesktop. The move cut login times to 20–40 seconds (as low as 20s), achieved 7.4:1 data reduction, let the team manage storage in-house without additional staff, and eliminated storage-related VDI support calls.
