OpenRice Improves Database Performance with Pure Storage

OpenRice is a Hong Kong–headquartered restaurant review portal serving much of Asia, listing over 1.9 million restaurants, 2.7 million registered diners and handling more than 9 million page views per day. Rapid growth, increasing user-generated content and new social and O2O features strained its legacy spinning‑disk storage, creating I/O bottlenecks that slowed database queries, impeded virtualization and limited the team’s ability to roll out new services.

Working with ELM, OpenRice replaced its disks with a Pure Storage FlashArray in a proof‑of‑concept and moved virtualized database servers onto flash. Throughput improved 8–9x with peak I/O of about 1.27 GB/s read and 1.24 GB/s write, speeding response times, reducing storage footprint and database licensing costs, enabling linear scale‑out, faster feature deployment and nondisruptive upgrades that freed IT staff for higher‑value work.
