A Pure Storage Case Study
Man AHL, a London‑based quantitative systematic investment manager with roughly $19 billion in assets, faced a critical infrastructure challenge: its legacy shared storage could not deliver the IOPS, bandwidth or scalability needed for large-scale simulations, Spark jobs and rapidly growing data (doubling about every 18 months). The storage bottleneck slowed researchers and developers, constrained use of modern analytics and required a simpler, more scalable solution that didn’t demand heavy operational overhead.
After a proof-of-concept, Man AHL deployed Pure FlashBlade, achieving up to 600,000 IOPS and measured throughput of 6 GB/s reads and 3 GB/s writes (about 329 TiB effective capacity). The platform delivered 10x–20x improvements on key workloads, allowed the research department to migrate within a month, removed the storage bottleneck, accelerated time-to-market for new models, and cut storage management effort while providing easy, linear scale for future growth.
