A Pure Storage Case Study
Kempenhorst College, a Dutch VMBO school with about 150 staff and 1,100 students, needed to modernize an aging Windows XP environment and deliver fast, flexible access to school applications — including CPU- and storage‑intensive CAD 3D workstations — across roughly 450 virtual workstations. The school faced costly administration, lesson disruption from infrastructure bottlenecks, and the need for a cost‑effective, scalable storage solution to make VDI viable.
Using VMware Horizon View with a Pure Storage FlashArray (FA‑420) and thin clients, Kempenhorst moved processing to the data center and virtualized CAD workstations. The result: VDI sessions now start in under 30 seconds, updates that once took 24 hours typically finish in 30 minutes, data reduction exceeds 6:1 (>80%), annual electricity and cooling savings of about €10,000, faster backups, dramatically simplified administration, and improved scalability and user satisfaction among students and staff.
