City of Garland Improves City Services

The City of Garland, TX — a municipal IT operation supporting 40 departments, three data centers and more than 300 production servers — needed a new storage solution to support a planned VDI rollout and resolve chronic performance bottlenecks in key applications such as utility billing and HR. Existing tiered storage couldn’t cure slow batch jobs and there was a risk of dramatically higher Oracle licensing costs if they moved to a larger virtualized server footprint.

A Pure Storage FlashArray proof-of-concept prompted a purchase and rapid migration of critical Oracle and SQL Server databases, producing dramatic results: billing reports dropped from 24 hours to 4 hours, payroll jobs fell from 14 hours to 30–60 minutes, and observed data compression reached as high as 7:1. The city consolidated servers, cutting required Oracle licenses from more than 100 cores to 16 (saving millions), rolled out VDI on schedule, reduced call-center wait times and eliminated much of the overnight firefighting for IT staff.
