Smartbit Running Smartschool Education Services from a Private Cloud with Puppet Enterprise

Smartbit, creator of Smartschool (used by about 90% of Flemish-language schools), faced the challenge of running a rapidly growing, predominantly Linux-based private cloud for education services with a very small IT team. As demand and infrastructure complexity grew, in-house scripts and early open source automation gave limited visibility and required many manual interventions across hundreds of nodes.

By moving from scripts to open source Puppet and then to Puppet Enterprise, Smartbit adopted infrastructure-as-code and DevOps practices (using Git/r10k, Geppetto, and centralized dashboards), integrated monitoring and alerts, and automated deployments. The result is faster, less error-prone deployments, quicker issue diagnosis and remediation, more strategic time for admins, and uninterrupted, scalable service delivery to the majority of Belgian schools.
