NYSE and ICE: Compliance, DevOps and Efficient Growth with Puppet Enterprise

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), part of Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), needed to scale thousands of servers and grow new business lines without proportionally increasing costs or staff. Provisioning was slow—holding up developers—and ICE’s reliance on open source Puppet required time‑consuming workarounds to manage its heterogeneous, regulated infrastructure.

ICE expanded use of Puppet Enterprise across exchanges, marketplaces and clearinghouses, eliminating custom fixes and automating builds. As a result, Puppet now manages 75% of ICE’s 20,000 servers, server-per-admin capacity rose from about 300 to 700–800, development environment provisioning fell from 1–2 days to ~21 minutes, server rebuilds are fast and consistent, and the platform supports compliance and rapid security updates.
