A Puppet Case Study
GNS Science’s GeoNet project delivers nationwide earthquake, volcanic and tsunami monitoring for New Zealand, so its IT must remain highly available even during natural disasters. Managing about 100 heterogeneous nodes across multiple data centers (RHEL/CentOS/Scientific Linux plus some Windows), the team needed consistency, visibility, repeatability and fast recovery to prevent configuration drift and to quickly rebuild or scale services during events.
Adopting Puppet Enterprise (with regional training and support) let GeoNet centralize versioned configurations, treat infrastructure as code, and manage hybrid cloud resources (including AWS) like regular VMs. The result was faster provisioning and orchestration, repeatable sandbox-to-production workflows, reduced configuration divergence, quick disaster recovery and proven ROI — giving the team greater confidence in the resiliency and scalability of its monitoring services.
