GNS Science, through its GeoNet project, needed to manage a heterogeneous and geographically dispersed IT infrastructure for geological hazard monitoring. Their manually configured systems were error-prone and difficult to recover quickly, which was critical given their mission to provide timely alerts about earthquakes and other natural disasters. To address this, they implemented Puppet Enterprise for configuration management and automation.

Using Puppet, the GeoNet team automated server provisioning and configuration, establishing a consistent base profile for all nodes. This allowed them to rapidly rebuild and scale their systems, including a migration to AWS. The measurable impact was profound: deploying new servers was reduced from days to minutes, and their alert system, GeoNet Rapid, can now provide earthquake details within two minutes of an event.
