A Puppet Case Study
CERN needed a reliable, real-time way to monitor daily operations and surface problems quickly so its team could work more efficiently and better plan future infrastructure. The challenge was scaling monitoring and configuration management across a large, complex environment while reducing latency and freeing engineers to focus on strategic work.
CERN implemented a monitoring system built around Puppet agents, Puppet servers and PuppetDB, with data flowing through Kafka and Logstash into Elasticsearch, InfluxDB and HDFS and visualized in Grafana, Kibana and Jupyter. The solution produced readable configuration data for 40,000 nodes, extracted and documented usable code from 350 catalogs per minute, reduced latency, improved performance and system services, updated infrastructure health reports, and freed engineer time for future growth.
