A Puppet Case Study
Borsa Istanbul, Turkey’s sole stock exchange, launched the BISTECH program with Nasdaq to modernize its software and infrastructure, requiring hundreds of new virtual and physical servers. The exchange relied on custom shell scripts, faced slow provisioning and release cycles, had no server security or compliance tooling, and lacked the time and budget for a commercial cloud platform—threatening costly increases in staff and operational delays.
After testing open source Puppet in 2014, the DevOps team adopted Puppet Enterprise and built a private cloud with Puppet and Automic to automate provisioning and continuous delivery. Provisioning dropped from about 10 days to one hour, application installs fell to minutes, release times shortened to under 10 minutes, and two administrators now manage 1,200 servers (roughly one per 600) versus the prior ratio of one per 200—yielding significant cost savings, improved security/compliance tracking, and scalable infrastructure growth.
