SANS Institute, a global cybersecurity training and certification organization, needed a faster, cleaner way to build, deploy, and manage cloud applications and infrastructure across multiple teams and environments. The DevOps team was dealing with a complex mix of AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Lambda functions, Bash scripts, Jira, and Rundeck to support its cloud delivery processes.

Using Pulumi, specifically the Pulumi Automation API, SANS Institute built a more streamlined GitOps-based deployment workflow and self-service platform for provisioning game servers and virtual training environments. Pulumi helped eliminate manual ticketing and tool sprawl, improve code quality with TypeScript, and enforce security best practices. As a result, SANS reduced deployment times by 70%, cutting game server provisioning from about 10 minutes to 3–5 minutes.
