Case Study: City of York Council improves real-time traffic management with PTV Optima from PTV Group

York integrates UK’s first city-wide real-time transport model with PTV Optima

City of York Council partnered with PTV Group to improve live traffic management in York, UK. The council needed a better way to monitor and respond to congestion across the city than relying on CCTV, social media, and manual interventions, and it deployed PTV Optima as part of its government-funded Smarter Travel Evolution Program.

PTV Group implemented PTV Optima as a real-time transport model that combines offline dynamic models with live traffic data from sensors, signal controllers, TomTom speed data, and roadworks information. The result is a single citywide view and forecast of traffic conditions, enabling earlier and more effective interventions, better signal control, and traffic predictions up to one hour ahead, with the system set to be maintained for at least six years.
