Case Study: Transport for London achieves faster traffic model runtimes with PTV Group's PTV Visum

The New Standard for Traffic Model Runtime

Transport for London (TfL) uses PTV Group’s PTV Visum software for its Operational Network Evaluator (ONE), a tactical highway traffic assignment model that helps assess the impact of transport schemes across Greater London. The challenge was to keep one of the world’s largest and most detailed junction-based highway models accurate and practical for day-to-day planning, while handling very large scale network analysis.

PTV Group helped TfL upgrade ONE to PTV Visum 2022, moving from scripted to built-in assignment and significantly improving runtime performance. The model now converges in 2.5 hours including a bespoke outer loop for taxi-in-bus-lane adjustments, and would run in under 1 hour without it, giving TfL faster scheme assessments, more available computation capacity, and smoother operation of its large-scale traffic model.
