Swiss Federal Railways uses Activity-Based Modeling to plan future travel

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) needed a better way to plan future travel and support customer-oriented door-to-door mobility solutions across Switzerland. To do this, SBB partnered with PTV Group and used PTV Visum to develop an activity-based model that simulates travel decisions for every inhabitant on a typical weekday.

PTV Group implemented PTV Visum as the data and modeling platform for SBB’s country-wide activity-based demand model, helping generate, store, manage, and visualize large-scale scenario data. The result was a fully disaggregated model for all of Switzerland, with a synthetic population of 2.2 million locations, 3.8 million households, and 8.6 million persons, plus 37 million daily activity executions bundled into 12 million tours, all generated in about 12 hours and used to support planning, investments, service concepts, and strategic decisions.
