Case Study: City of Copenhagen advances bike-friendly traffic planning with PTV Vissim from PTV Group

Simulations make Copenhagen world’s best bicycle city

COWI worked with PTV Group to help the City of Copenhagen better understand and plan for bicycle traffic as the city aimed to become the world’s most bike-friendly city. Using PTV Vissim, the team needed to simulate cyclist behavior at peak hours and assess how future infrastructure and traffic measures would affect bike traffic.

PTV Group’s PTV Vissim was used to build a calibrated microsimulation based on extensive data collection, including observations, video recordings, and GPS measurements. The model now lets planners realistically test measures such as new cycle tracks, green waves, bike boxes, and mixed-traffic layouts in advance, helping Copenhagen evaluate options before implementation and improve planning for current and future bicycle traffic.
