How to prepare electric vehicle charging infrastructure

SP Energy Networks partnered with PTV Group to tackle the challenge of planning for future electric vehicle charging demand across the UK’s Northwest as EV adoption accelerates and the ban on new petrol and diesel cars approaches. Using PTV Visum, they set out to understand where and when charging infrastructure would be needed under different future market and technology scenarios.

PTV Group helped build a detailed transport model in PTV Visum that combined trip patterns, demographics, land use, and electricity network capacity data to forecast EV charging demand and identify likely grid constraints. The results supported the ConnectMore Interactive Map, a free online tool for planners and installers, and showed in the “Net Zero” scenario that EV electricity demand could grow fivefold from 2025 to 2030 and then double again by 2035, helping guide network upgrades and charge point rollout decisions.
