Creating a public transport system from scratch

The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi launched a public bus transportation service in a car-dominated environment and needed to build an integrated, world-class public transport network from scratch. To plan the new system effectively, it turned to PTV Group and its PTV Visum transport planning software to model demand, evaluate network sufficiency, and support both strategic and operational bus planning.

PTV Group implemented a Bus Planning Model in PTV Visum that calculated KPIs such as service coverage, passenger volume, utilization, vehicle requirements, average speed, and fuel consumption, while also linking with scheduling, fare collection, and vehicle management systems. As a result, the DoT launched a new public bus system serving over 50 million passenger trips per year, integrated passenger and runtime data directly into planning, and established a twice-yearly network planning cycle that improved decision-making and operational efficiency.
