A PTC Case Study
The University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project needed to design and build a safe, lightweight, aerodynamic four‑wheel solar car in just 10 months to compete in the 3,000‑km Bridgestone World Solar Challenge across the Australian Outback. The student‑led team relied on PTC software—most notably PTC Creo (supported through the PTC Academic Program) and related PLM and design tools—to handle CAD, collaboration, and systems integration across aerodynamics, electrical, mechanical and safety subsystems.
PTC supplied the design and lifecycle tools that enabled a shared 3D model, rapid iteration, accurate part fit (enabling successful 3D‑printed prototypes and one‑time‑right battery housings), and coordinated multidisciplinary testing. Using PTC Creo and associated solutions the team completed the vehicle in 10 months, finished the 2013 World Solar Challenge (3,000 km) reaching speeds over 80 mph, and produced measurable educational and career outcomes through real‑world engineering experience.
