A PTC Case Study
Metalltechnik Vils, a 100‑year‑old family machining business in Vils, Austria, faces intense price competition from low‑cost shops while producing precision parts for customers like Bosch, Swarovski and Kuka. To stay competitive the company adopted DMG MORI’s DMC 80 U duoBLOCK® 5‑axis milling center — a machine developed using PTC design software — and relied on PTC tools such as PTC Creo (and PTC Windchill) to meet strict accuracy, speed and flexibility requirements.
Using PTC Creo and Creo Simulate, DMG MORI optimized the duoBLOCK® design (cutting dynamic mass by 50% and improving static stability), enabled rapid 3D validation and reduced physical prototypes, and leveraged top‑down concurrent design with PTC Windchill. The result: a 14‑month concept‑to‑production cycle (16 months faster than before), a compact, higher‑precision machine with lower energy use and a 400‑tool changer with sub‑second swaps — outcomes that helped Metalltechnik Vils win more orders and secure a full order book.
