Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility manages nearly 40,000 optics and needed to streamline engineering reference manuals, safety notes, a materials and bolt-properties library, and reliable SI/English unit conversions. To address these challenges the lab worked with vendor PTC, adopting PTC Mathcad to capture calculation-heavy procedures and standardize reusable data and safety documentation.

PTC implemented PTC Mathcad worksheets and a reference library so engineers can call pre‑tested functions, material properties and critical values across documents and mix units without manual conversions. The result: common problems are solved about three times faster using sample problems, engineers retrieve properties 10–20% faster from reference files, and automated unit handling has reduced calculation errors.
