A PTC Case Study
NedTrain, the leading provider of rolling stock maintenance in the Netherlands, faced growing operational pressure after splitting from NS: it was contracted to maintain 2,800 units while keeping no more than 170 in maintenance at once but regularly breached that limit. To attract new customers and reduce lifecycle costs across a complex network (9 main locations, 35 service sites, 65 warehouses), NedTrain needed better planning and forecasting, higher parts availability (baseline ~70% rotables / 83% consumables), reduced cannibalization, and clearer separation of planned vs. unplanned usage — so it sought a service‑based parts management solution from PTC.
PTC’s Service Parts Management solution was deployed and integrated with NedTrain’s ERP to plan and synchronize stock across the network. Using PTC, NedTrain raised parts availability to 94% at location level and 98.5% at network level, reduced inventory while honoring SLAs, centralized and rebalanced stock into a new Tilburg distribution center, and began forecasting planned and unplanned usage separately. The implementation handled ~26,500 stock items (€40m value), supported 210,000 annual stock movements, and delivered measurable improvements in service levels and customer satisfaction.
