Vale of Glamorgan Council Upgrades to Higher Bandwidth Network For New Demanding Academic Applications

Vale of Glamorgan Council, which serves more than 80 educational institutions across the southernmost point of Wales, faced rising maintenance and capital costs for its wired WAN and growing demand for high‑bandwidth academic applications (VLE, YouTube, BBC iPlayer). To address slow, inconsistent internet and avoid continual expensive wireline upgrades, the council engaged Proxim Wireless and its partners, deploying Proxim’s Tsunami® point‑to‑point radios and ProximVision® network management.

Proxim Wireless implemented a county‑wide wireless WAN using Tsunami radios (leveraging WORP® and ClearConnect) with centralized management via ProximVision, consolidating security services and avoiding trenching/fiber costs. The rollout connected all academic sites cost‑effectively, delivered a “huge improvement” in internet and network speeds, restored reliable video streaming and VLE performance, and lowered recurring OPEX—providing the solution at a fraction of the cost of expanding the previous wireline network.
