Proxim Reduces Congestion On The Streets of San Jose, USA

San Jose City Government needed a wide-area network to modernize traffic management across the city—covering roughly 900 signals and 320 cameras—and faced dense foliage and severe non-line-of-sight conditions that made wired or conventional wireless links impractical. To meet these challenges the city evaluated and selected Proxim Wireless, deploying its Tsunami multipoint radios (Tsunami® 8200 series) to provide the required outdoor wireless connectivity.

Proxim Wireless installed over 200 Tsunami 8200 base and subscriber units using WORP® and nLoS capabilities to link 130+ traffic signal controllers, dozens of LED street-light gateways and vehicle speed feedback signs, with more than half the links operating successfully through trees. The deployment eliminated extensive trenching and cabling, saving the city an estimated $10+ million, cut installation time by about 70%, delivered high uptime and data rates, and provided ongoing vendor support from Proxim Wireless.
