Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute enrolls 3x more non-white participants with Provoc

The Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute faced a challenge in recruiting Black and Latinx participants for a COVID-19 clinical trial after their initial high-cost Facebook campaign failed to successfully engage these underrepresented communities. Their goal was to increase the proportion of participants from these groups within a total target enrollment of 600 people. The institute engaged Provoc for its clinical trial recruitment services.

Provoc developed a uniquely targeted narrative and digital marketing campaign, actively iterating content based on performance data. They partnered with community-based organizations to disseminate information and address health-related concerns. This approach generated 3,059 sign-ups from interested Black and Latinx individuals, with 1,302 being study eligible. Provoc helped enroll three times higher proportions of non-white participants compared to prior efforts and achieved a lower overall cost per enrollee.
