The first adjustable implant for glaucoma treatment by Rheon Medical

Rheon Medical, an EPFL spin-off focused on glaucoma drainage devices, needed to industrialize two ultra-miniaturized microsurgery tools for placing its revolutionary eyeWatch implant, the world’s first adjustable implant for glaucoma treatment. The challenge was to produce ancillaries that were as small and precise as possible for a new surgical procedure, while meeting medical safety and traceability requirements.

Protolabs supported Rheon Medical with injection moulding, using biocompatible, sterilisable materials and modifiable aluminium moulds to enable rapid iterations and small-batch production. The result was a refined clamp and marker that surgeons could use reliably during implantation, with Protolabs’ design analysis helping the team identify improvements within two days and streamline the path to production.
