Samrey Generators & Turbines Ltd, a start-up designing compact micro wind-turbines, needed an initial batch of 30 plastic propeller blades for its 1m-diameter turbine and wanted a more production-ready alternative to messy manual fiberglass lamination. It turned to Protolabs for rapid injection moulding and tooling support to help develop the part.

Protolabs reviewed the 3D model through its ProtoQuote system, suggested cost-saving design improvements, and produced the complex nylon turbine blades using DuPont Zytel resin ahead of the quoted 15-day lead time. Samrey was very pleased with the parts, later reordered 600 more blades, and secured a US licensing agreement that will continue to rely on Protolabs for future blade supply.
