Proven Energy, a fast-growing wind turbine manufacturer based in Stewarton, Ayrshire, needed a way to improve the accuracy and build quality of its 6kW down-wind turbines while reducing assembly time and labour costs. To support the automated winding of the generator core, the company turned to Protolabs for a precision plastic bobbin used as an accurate spacer on the core.

Protolabs reviewed Proven Energy’s design, suggested material and design modifications, and worked through a few revision rounds efficiently and quickly. The result was a high-accuracy moulded part that helped improve product quality and significantly cut assembly time; with 18 bobbins per machine, production is expected to reach around 10,000 units per year for the 6kW model, with further growth as the part is extended across the range.
