A Protolabs Case Study
OceanLED, a UK marine and architectural lighting company, needed a faster, more flexible and lower-cost way to produce plastic components for its new LED light ranges as it moved beyond bespoke super-yacht work into higher-volume consumer markets. Lacking experience with injection moulding, the team was looking for a partner that could help them design and manufacture quality parts efficiently, and turned to Protolabs’ rapid injection moulding and online ProtoQuote service.
With Protolabs, OceanLED was able to upload CAD designs, get costed manufacturing quotes and design feedback within hours, and iterate quickly on mounting brackets and clamp components for its Amphibian range. Protolabs helped OceanLED optimise lightweight, strong, low-cost parts, then move from prototype to low-volume production-quality mouldings from the same tool, allowing the kits to retail for around £15-20 and be produced in batches of just 500 rather than requiring thousands to justify traditional tooling.
