A Protolabs Case Study
Nokia Enterprise Solutions faced the significant engineering challenge of developing a high-tech, 5G-capable security drone that adhered to stringent aviation safety regulations. The drone required specialized materials that were lightweight, durable, and crucially, would not interfere with its high-frequency 5G data transmission. To support the development and manufacturing of these critical components, Nokia partnered with the digital manufacturer Protolabs and its rapid injection molding service.
Protolabs collaborated closely with Nokia to overcome these hurdles, most notably by identifying a suitable polycarbonate material that met all certification and performance needs after an initial material was abandoned. The vendor expertly adapted existing tooling for the new material and provided essential design for manufacturability advice to ensure successful molding. The outcome was the rapid production and delivery of 19 different molded parts, which were intrinsic to the drone's framework and performance, enabling Nokia to successfully assemble its certified UAV and establish a trusted, long-term partnership with Protolabs.
