Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, in collaboration with University College London, required a rapid manufacturing solution to produce components for a new CPAP device to treat COVID-19 patients. Their challenge was to develop injection moulding tooling for a bracket and cap in an extremely short timeframe to meet urgent NHS demand. They engaged Protolabs and its rapid tooling service to accelerate this critical production.

Protolabs assembled a dedicated team to ensure design for manufacturability, quickly iterating on the parts and employing a strategy of multiple tools and cavity moulds to maximize simultaneous production. The vendor delivered three injection moulding tools in just three days, enabling daily production of 1,100 of each component. This speed allowed for the delivery of 10,000 brackets and caps within 14 days of the initial enquiry, directly supporting the UK government's order and getting the life-saving devices to hospitals.
