Case Study: HemoSonics achieves rapid prototyping and European launch of the Quantra System with Protolabs

A Protolabs Case Study

Preview of the HemoSonics Case Study

HemoSonics used CNC machining, injection molding, and other services to quickly develop blood analysis machine

HemoSonics, a Charlottesville medtech company that developed the Quantra System blood‑clot analysis machine, faced tight timelines for iterative design and later needed large, production‑quality casings that met color and flammability requirements. To meet those needs the company partnered with Protolabs for quick‑turn digital manufacturing services including CNC machining, 3D printing, injection molding and sheet‑metal fabrication.

Protolabs produced hundreds of prototypes and thousands of components within days, adding finishing services (heat staking, pad printing) and solving a color‑matching issue by working with a resin supplier to pre‑compound pigments for flawless injection‑molded parts. The rapid, flexible support from Protolabs helped HemoSonics commercialize Quantra — launched in Europe and now granted FDA marketing authorization and available in the U.S. — while enabling faster design cycles and scaled production.
