A Protolabs Case Study
Forgtin, an Austrian medical device startup founded by tinnitus sufferer Klaus Grübl, faced the challenge of manufacturing a complex and customizable wearable device to alleviate chronic tinnitus. The device required intricate geometries and needed to meet high medical standards. They partnered with digital manufacturing vendor Protolabs to bring their product, also named Forgtin, to market.
Protolabs provided a comprehensive solution utilizing their 3D printing (specifically direct metal laser sintering), laser cutting, and injection moulding services. This multi-process approach allowed for the rapid production of the device's complex metal brackets and comfortable silicone elements. With support from Protolabs, Forgtin moved from the initial design to starting production in just eight weeks, achieved CE certification as a class 1 medical device, and successfully prepared for a market launch. An initial study showed the device reduced patients' perceived tinnitus by 30 to 100 percent.
