Flame Mountainboards - Customer Case Study

Flame Mountainboards, a German manufacturer of off-road mountainboards, faced the challenge of designing and producing a high-quality, affordable board to meet rapidly growing demand. A central component was a unique, non-standard wheel rim that required custom manufacturing. Founder Albert Müller turned to Protolabs and its rapid injection moulding services to develop this crucial part without the prohibitive cost of traditional tooling.

Protolabs worked closely with the customer to iteratively develop the wheel rim, advising on design changes and testing various glass fibre-reinforced materials until an optimal, durable solution was found. This collaboration, which also expanded to include lightweight board bases, resulted in a high-quality component that was central to the board's performance. By using Protolabs, Flame Mountainboards saved significantly, estimating that conventional mould tools would have cost four to five times more, allowing them to bring their innovative and affordable product to market.
