3d Printer And Scanner Expedite Prototyping For Auto Supplier

Magna Closures, a Magna International subsidiary, needed faster, more accurate prototypes because its door and closure components must fit complex vehicle geometries and designers often lacked CAD data. Proto3000 addressed this challenge by delivering in-house FDM 3D printers and a portable 3D scanner (HandySCAN-style scanner) so teams could capture vehicle geometry and produce production-grade prototypes quickly.

With Proto3000’s solution, Magna Closures cut proposal development from 12 weeks to 2 weeks and reduced per-proposal costs from about $30,000 to $2,000 — saving roughly 10 weeks (83%) and $28,000 (93%) versus the prior iterative process. The new workflow often achieved first-time fit, enabled a fivefold increase in product development projects without adding staff, sped customer response, and is expected to substantially boost orders and revenue.
