U.S. retailer launches global supply chain capability in record time

U.S. Retailing Company engaged Protiviti to execute a strategic mandate to build a new global supply chain capability in under six months. The retailer needed to source tens of thousands of parts from overseas, satisfy complex customs and tariff requirements, and stand up nationwide importing and distribution operations quickly to reduce costs and support a strategic push expected to generate an incremental $100 million in gross profit.

Protiviti organized the effort into four work streams—procurement, importing/customs, distribution and systems development—conducting supplier due diligence, prioritizing 13,000 parts from a 110,000‑part universe, classifying tariffs and paperwork, running a 4PL selection and integration, and building interim systems and training. Protiviti’s approach delivered the capability in less than six months: 99.9% of ordered products cleared customs and were delivered to distribution centers and service locations on schedule for the initial rollout, and distribution was extended to 11 of the company’s 16 U.S. markets.
