New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. (NES&L Co.), a privately held construction materials supplier and contractor, faced new Sarbanes‑Oxley compliance requirements after issuing public debt in 2013 and needed an automated system to document internal‑control testing and enable business‑process owner attestations. After evaluating options, NES&L Co. selected Protiviti and implemented the Protiviti Governance Portal in January 2014 to replace manual email and spreadsheet‑based processes.

Protiviti configured the Governance Portal to automate document requests, surveys, test documentation, action‑plan tracking and dashboard reporting, creating a single repository for controls, work papers and evidence. The solution eliminated much of the time auditors spent chasing emails and typing entries, reduced the potential for manual errors, and enabled real‑time reporting; within four months more than 100 business users were using the system across multiple audit and compliance tasks.
