Saltchuk, a $2.5 billion, 7,500‑employee transportation group operating more than 15 companies across six lines of business, faced limited cross‑organizational financial reporting transparency and the risk of financial misstatements. To build company‑wide visibility and SOX‑level controls without large capital outlay, Saltchuk engaged Protiviti and selected Protiviti’s cloud‑based Governance Portal to empower its new internal audit function.

Protiviti configured the Governance Portal with comprehensive risk/control spreadsheets, used an Excel upload utility to go live quickly, and enabled the Assessment Management Engine to validate processes across seven ERPs and 20 financial systems. The solution harmonized audit efforts across locations (including a recent Florida acquisition), supports a six‑person audit team and ~175 users, streamlines annual external auditor reviews, and materially reduced the effort to report risks and controls—delivering cohesive internal audit operations and time savings that Saltchuk is expanding into legal and compliance.
