Karara Mining cleanses and standardizes its Spare Parts with MDO

Karara Mining Ltd, the largest magnetite mine in Mid-West Australia, struggled with thousands of duplicate spare parts and non‑standardized descriptions that prevented accurate inventory control and efficient maintenance. The company engaged Prospecta to deploy MDO (Master Data Online) to address spare parts master data quality and creation processes.

Prospecta used MDO to cleanse and standardize approximately 12,000–13,000 spare part records, implement UNSPSC‑based categorization, and enforce noun‑modifier‑attribute descriptions via its Material Description Generator, with duplicate checks at creation. As a result, duplicates were removed, inventory levels stabilized, maintenance efficiency improved, and false stock‑outs were eliminated.
