Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a major UK healthcare provider with over 6,000 IT users, needed an email encryption solution that integrated with its Microsoft Exchange environment, was invisible and easy for staff and recipients, and would protect sensitive patient data and PII. After choosing not to use NHS Mail, the IT team ran a 30‑day audit that revealed more than 1,000 instances of unencrypted outbound mail, underscoring the urgent need to secure inbound and outbound email without disrupting users.

The Trust deployed Proofpoint Enterprise Protection appliances to secure mailboxes, replace aging Barracuda devices, and provide combined anti‑spam, anti‑virus and encryption under one scalable system. The rollout met the Trust’s goals for inbound and outbound security, improved data control and compliance, halved the number of appliances, freed IT resources for other projects, and delivered a future‑proof platform with strong user uptake across clinical and business departments.
