Shelter Insurance® Prevents Fraudulent Email with Proofpoint

Shelter Insurance, a mutual insurer founded in 1946 that now supports more than two million policies across 21 states with nearly 4,000 employees and agents, discovered it was a major target for email‑based attacks including business email compromise, account takeover and domain‑spoofing. Their mixed email environment (Office 365, Lotus Notes and attachment scanning) wasn’t catching the volume or sophistication of threats; a Proofpoint proof‑of‑concept revealed a far larger stream of phishing, malware and spam than the team expected.

Shelter implemented Proofpoint’s people‑centric suite—Email Protection, Targeted Attack Protection, Threat Response (TRAP), Email Fraud Defense, DMARC rollout via Proofpoint Professional Services, and Security Awareness Training—and layered automated remediation with employee education. The results: ~99% of phishing and malware blocked and more than 95% of malicious‑URL emails stopped, over 6.8M malicious messages blocked in two months, DMARC exposed >8,000 IPs across 100+ countries and 10 lookalike domains, investigation time fell from days to under an hour, and phishing click rates dropped from ~33% to 7% after a year while reports of suspected attacks tripled.
