A Proofpoint Case Study
Miele, the German maker of premium household and industrial appliances, faced rapidly rising message volumes driven by product innovations (including email-enabled appliances), expanding global customer and partner communications, and new international disclosure laws. Growing spam and malware further strained its single-layer groupware gateway, creating performance and compliance risks.
Miele moved to a multi-layered messaging architecture: an External Protection Layer in the DMZ using Sendmail Sentrion appliances (later upgraded and augmented with virus scanning) for routing and filtering, and an Internal Policy Layer using virtual Sentrion MPV for LDAP-driven, country-specific outbound policies and routing. The redesign reduced unwanted mail reaching groupware and users, ensured compliant, reliable delivery (including for the RemoteVision appliance program), improved scalability, and simplified adding new messaging services.
