Preview of the Entertainment Giant Company Case Study

Entertainment Giant Stomps Social Media Hacks

A century-old American entertainment giant that owns major TV networks, film studios and other media properties expanded aggressively into social media and soon discovered significant security gaps. After assessing the risk—spurred by high-profile hacks like the Syrian Electronic Army’s attacks on news outlets—the company formed a task force and found thousands of accounts linked to its brands, leaving its reputation and audiences exposed to fraud, piracy and account takeover.

Working with marketing, the firm deployed Proofpoint SocialDiscover and SocialPatrol to locate and secure its social footprint and enforce content policies. SocialDiscover identified 3,745 brand-linked accounts (533 fraudulent), while SocialPatrol’s ProfileLock and policy controls blocked more than 62,000 potential incidents during the 2014 Winter Olympics, supervised 82.2 million messages, and removed nearly 208,000 posts—reducing piracy, preventing hacks, and protecting the company’s brand and audience experience.
