Australian City Council Keeps Public Sector Communications and Services Secure With Proofpoint

Maribyrnong City Council, which serves a diverse community of about 90,000 residents, faced rising user-targeted threats such as phishing, business email compromise and supply-chain fraud while migrating services to the cloud. With a perimeter-focused setup protecting roughly 650 users and 120 servers, the council needed automated, user-centric protection, better cloud visibility, and stronger security culture to stop sophisticated email attacks.

The council deployed the Proofpoint Threat Protection Platform—including Email Protection, Targeted Attack Protection (TAP), Threat Response Auto‑Pull (TRAP), Email Fraud/Internal Mail Defense, CASB, Browser Isolation and Security Awareness Training—giving AI-driven email filtering, post-delivery quarantine and cloud app visibility. Results included blocking more than 88% of incoming malicious/spam emails, TAP reporting 99.7% effectiveness over 90 days, a ~40% drop in “rubbish” mail after DMARC, faster response to supply‑chain fraud, fewer incidents and more IT time for community services.
