ABB builds a universal robotics platform in 2025 with Promwad

The customer, ABB, faced a significant challenge in robotics development where compatibility issues between modern Nvidia Jetson/Orin hardware platforms and industrial components like servo drives required costly additional integration solutions. This negatively impacted both the cost and performance of their final robotic systems. To overcome this, they partnered with the vendor Promwad to develop a universal platform.

Promwad designed and implemented a first-of-its-kind universal robotics platform based on Nvidia Jetson/Orin and powered by Hilscher netX communication controllers. This solution provided built-in support for major industrial protocols like EtherCAT, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP, eliminating the need for extra hardware. The result for ABB was a versatile platform that increased system reliability, provided significant resource savings, and simplified the development process for a wide range of robotic systems, from mobile to 6-axis robots.
